Arborist/Tree Surgeon – A person trained in arboriculture, which is the cultivation, maintenance, and study of perennial woody plants.
Bark Inclusion – When two or more branches/stems of a tree grow inwards against each other, forming a V. This places stress on the internal wood structure and can crack the tree’s trunk.
Branch Collar – The “shoulder” between the branch and trunk of woody plants.
Pruning – The removal of dead, dying, or diseased branches which are impacting the tree’s health, stability, and visual appeal.
Coarse Pruning – The removal of dead, diseased, or dying branches down to 50mm in diameter.
Fine Pruning – The removal of dead, diseased, or dying branches down to 12mm in diameter.
Medium Pruning – The removal of dead, dying, or diseased branches down to 25mm in diameter.
Formative pruning – The process of shaping a tree when it’s young for aesthetics and its health.
Selective pruning – The removal of specific branches without being detrimental to the tree’s health.
Crown/Canopy – The area where branches grow outward from the tree trunk.
Crown/Canopy Lifting – The removal of lower branches to reduce the height or spread of a tree.
Deadwood – Parts of a tree or branch that are dead.
Deadwooding – The removal of deadwood from a tree.
Deciduous – A tree or shrub shedding its leaves annually.
Foliage – The leaves of a plant or tree.
Stem – The main body or stalk of a plant.
Leader – The primary stem of a plant, generally the top stem.
Limb – Includes any main branches from the tree’s trunk.
Thinning – Includes crown lifting and selective pruning to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown.
Trunk – The main woody stem of a tree.
